How much do restaurant servers and cooks actually save with Alice?
Restaurant servers and cooks typically save about 20% on transit and qualified parking when they run those dollars through Alice pretax. Actual savings depend on your tax situation. The exact dollar figure comes from your federal bracket, your state, and how much you spend each month on commuting.
Why restaurant employers offer Alice
Tipped-wage and hourly staff feel commute costs more sharply than salaried workers, and a pretax benefit gives back take-home pay every paycheck. Employers see a payroll tax reduction on every dollar an employee runs pretax, with no up-front employer cost.
There is no manual open enrollment to manage, and no employee pre-funding. The employer keeps a reserve amount in its Alice plan account; it belongs to the employer and is not a fee. Traditional office-worker pretax benefit companies make you pay up front and manage enrollment and payroll on your own. Alice does not.
What restaurant employees get
Restaurant employees get Alice Card, a Visa commercial credit card issued by Celtic Bank and powered by Stripe. Program funds are held at Fifth Third Bank, N.A. (Member FDIC). They tap it at transit fare gates, commuter rail vending, bus fareboxes, parking garages, parking lots, parking meters, and parking apps.
IRS 2026 limits are $340 per month for transit and $340 per month for qualified parking under Rev. Proc. 2025-32. Uber and Lyft are not IRS-eligible commuter expenses, with a narrow vanpool carve-out.
How restaurant payroll connections work
Alice connects to 30+ payroll providers, including connections to ADP, UKG, Paylocity, Paycom, Paychex, Toast, and others. Deductions post to the employee's wage record automatically, and the savings flow through on the next paycheck.
Setup speed
Setup starts with one call. Most restaurants launch within two weeks of that call, depending on how quickly payroll credentials are shared.
How much restaurant workers actually save
NYC server, $130 monthly MetroCard
At a roughly 20% blended federal, state, and FICA rate, that is about $26 per month back in take-home, or roughly $312 per year.
Chicago line cook, $100 monthly Metra pass plus $80 parking on shift days
That is $180 per month run pretax. At about 20%, that is roughly $36 per month back, or roughly $432 per year.
Boston bartender, $90 monthly CharlieCard plus $120 parking near the restaurant
That is $210 per month run pretax. At about 20%, that is roughly $42 per month back, or roughly $504 per year.
Suburban DC cook, $200 monthly parking at the restaurant's office park
At about 20%, that is roughly $40 per month back, or roughly $480 per year.
At enrollment we call that take-home difference "cash back." For a server or cook reading their phone between shifts, "save on taxes" has to be a concrete number, not an abstraction.
FAQs for restaurant workers
Will my paycheck actually go up?
Yes. The pretax deduction lowers your taxable wages, so less tax is withheld and your take-home pay goes up.
What if I do not spend the full IRS limit?
Your election is set from your spending history, so it adjusts with you as your shifts, hours, tips, and paychecks change. There is no penalty for spending less than the cap.
What if I leave the job?
Your election ends with your employment. There is no rollover to a new employer's plan.

Savings shown or implied — including any reference to "cash back" or take-home pay — are illustrative. Actual savings depend on your tax rate, benefit elections, and eligible spending each pay period. "Cash back" in Alice's materials refers to the federal, state, and FICA payroll taxes you don't pay on eligible commuter spending. It is income tax you keep, not a cash payment from Alice, your employer, or any third party. Alice does not provide cash back, rebates, or any direct financial benefit in connection with the Program. Alice does not provide tax, legal, or financial advice. Consult your own tax preparer, lawyer, or financial advisor for guidance specific to your situation.
Figures shown are for the 2026 plan year and are set by the IRS. Limits are indexed annually by the IRS.
