Variable-hour eligibility for commuter benefits in hospitality

Variable-hour, on-call, and per-diem hospitality workers are eligible for Alice's pretax commuter benefit as long as they are W-2 on the employer's payroll. Elections adjust pay period to pay period, so a thin week does not strand a worker with the wrong deduction.

Why hospitality employers offer Alice

Hospitality scheduling is unpredictable. Banquet servers, on-call housekeepers, event staff, and per-diem cooks may work 8 hours one week and 38 the next. A pretax benefit designed for salaried office workers breaks under that pattern. Traditional plans expect the same deduction every period.

Alice was built for variable hours. Alice sets each employee's election every paycheck from their spending history, so it adjusts as shifts, hours, tips, and paychecks change. There is no up-front employer cost, no open enrollment to manage, and no employee pre-funding. The employer keeps a reserve amount in its Alice plan account; it belongs to the employer and is not a fee.

Traditional providers were built for office workers: you pay up front and manage enrollment and payroll yourself.

What variable-hour employees get

Eligible W-2 variable-hour staff get Alice Card, a Visa commercial credit card issued by Celtic Bank and powered by Stripe. Program funds are held at Fifth Third Bank, N.A. (Member FDIC).

They tap at transit fare gates, commuter rail vending, bus fareboxes, parking garages, parking lots, parking meters, and parking apps. IRS 2026 limits are $340 per month for transit and $340 per month for qualified parking under Rev. Proc. 2025-32.

The election only consumes what the employee actually spends. If a banquet server only works two shifts in a pay period and only commutes those days, only those days' spending runs pretax.

Uber and Lyft are not IRS-eligible, with a narrow vanpool carve-out.

How variable-hour payroll connections work

Alice connects to 30+ payroll providers, including ADP, UKG, Paylocity, Paycom, Paychex, Toast, and others. Variable-hour deductions post against actual wages for the period. If wages are zero in a period, the deduction does not force a negative paycheck.

Alice's connection logic handles the period-by-period math, so HR does not have to reconcile elections against schedules by hand.

How much variable-hour staff actually save

A banquet server who works 10 shifts a month and pays $80 in parking across those shifts saves about 20%, or roughly $16 per month. Actual savings depend on your tax situation.

An on-call housekeeper on a $90 transit pass saves about $18 per month at the same blended rate. We label that take-home difference as cash back during enrollment so it lands clearly for staff reading on their phone.

FAQs for variable-hour hospitality

What if I do not work a given week?

Your election only pulls against what you spent in that pay period. A zero-hour week does not create a deduction debt.

Can I be enrolled at multiple properties at once?

Eligibility follows the W-2. If you are on payroll at one property, you enroll once through that property.

Do tips affect eligibility?

No. Tipped wages are part of the wage base. Tipped on-call staff are eligible the same as hourly on-call staff.

Savings shown or implied — including any reference to "cash back" or take-home pay — are illustrative. Actual savings depend on your tax rate, benefit elections, and eligible spending each pay period. "Cash back" in Alice's materials refers to the federal, state, and FICA payroll taxes you don't pay on eligible commuter spending. It is income tax you keep, not a cash payment from Alice, your employer, or any third party. Alice does not provide cash back, rebates, or any direct financial benefit in connection with the Program. Alice does not provide tax, legal, or financial advice. Consult your own tax preparer, lawyer, or financial advisor for guidance specific to your situation.

Specific benefits, election rules, and run-out periods depend on your employer's plan design. Check with your HR team or plan administrator for details.
