What about business expenses?
What about business expenses?
The IRS rules require that pretax-eligible commuter expenses be personal expenses, not business expenses. That means:
- Spending charged to a company credit card and treated as a business expense cannot also be claimed pretax through Alice.
- Spending that an employer reimburses outside of the pretax commuter benefit cannot be claimed pretax.
The IRS rules on deducting business expenses are summarized here: irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/deducting-business-expenses.
What if an employee connects a business credit card to Alice?
There's no rule against an employee adding a card that happens to be a business card, although some banks may block the connection. The employee is responsible for confirming only the personal, commuting transactions that are eligible.
- Your business is not responsible for an individual employee's pretax-spending decisions or claims.
- Employees should confirm only personal commuter expenses, and they can contact Alice Support with questions.
