How much can I spend with commuter benefits?

In 2024, the IRS says that you can claim:

  • Mass transit: up to $315 each month
  • Parking: up to $315 each month

The IRS allows employees to claim a combined total of $630 in 2024 - in pretax commuting expenses each calendar month.  The maximum amount for each month can be made on personal cards, Alice Card, or a combination of the two.

Alice Card is run like a credit card, though you can spend up to the amounts allowed by the IRS each month. This monthly credit limit adjusts as you confirm expenses on your personal card or spend on Alice Card. It resets every month to the maximum amount allowed by the IRS. There are never any fees or credit checks to use Alice Card. You never have to pre-load or pre-pay Alice Card!  You only pay for what you spend (and save on income taxes in the process)!

Claim dates are determined by your paycheck date, not when you make the purchase.

For example:  If you spend $33 on January 31st, this won't process until your first paycheck in February.  This will count against your February claims, not your January claims.

Once you have reached the limit for each category on Alice Card, Personal Card, or a combination you won't be able to spend more on Alice Card until the next month.

You can continue to confirm expenses on your personal card connected to Alice and we'll put those claims through for you in payroll next month! Just remember, these amounts will limit the total amount available on Alice Card for the following month too.
